Policies & Procedures

At this time MASKS must be worn on the bus until further notice - The Senior Center offers transportation for seniors to and from the Senior Center on weekdays. In addition, (this service is temporarily suspended until further notice) each Tuesday a bus is available for grocery shopping and each Wednesday a bus is availabe for retail shopping.  This daytime Senior Center Transportation is available for seniors aged 60 and over.

Reserving a Ride

Reservations should be made by 3:00 the day before the ride is needed.  To reserve a ride, please call 860-647-3211 or visit the Senior Center office.  The drivers cannot accept reservations.  We request that you reserve rides only for yourself and not for other seniors.

Booking a Ride for the Same Day

If space is available, you will be offered a ride.  Please note that some flexibility on timing may be needed, but we will accommodate your request for a ride if possible.

Cancelling a Ride

If you need to cancel a ride, please do so as far ahead as possible.  If you cancel at the last minute, it may mean that someone else has been refused a ride that could have been provided.

Being Ready

Expect the van to arrive at any time between 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after the scheduled pick up time.  Please be ready for your ride 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled pick up.  This allows for more flexibility in scheduling so that more people can ride the bus.  If possible, please wait where you can see the bus arrive.

Drivers Wait Time

To avoid delaying other passengers, drivers can only wait 5 minutes for you. 
The bus driver will either phone ahead to let you know their arrival time or
upon arrival to your address, they will beep their horn and try to call you again.
Please be ready to leave when your driver arrives.


We will make every effort to pick you up on time, but traffic, weather or other delays may sometimes result in an unavoidable late pick-up. The Senior Center office will try to contact you when there is a delay and reasonable time affords a phone call. If you find for some reason that the bus is later than the expected arrival time listed above, please feel free to call the Senior Center Front Office at
860-647-3211 for clarification.

Inclement Weather

In inclement weather, when Manchester schools are delayed due to bad weather ( 2 HR Delay), transportation will be delayed for 2 Hours.  The Senior Center would then open for business at 10:30 a.m.  If Manchester schools are closed due to bad weather, transportation will be cancelled for the day and the Senior Center will also be closed for classes/activities and Lunch. Regardless of Senior Center delays and/or Senior Center Closings, the staff is required to report to the office to maintain the office phone lines. Senior Center members are encouraged to check for cancellations or delays during inclement weather.  The following sources will have information on weather-related schedule changes:

For your safety and the safety of others, you must use a seatbelt at all times.  You must be able to board and exit the bus on your own or with the asistance of an aid. If you are traveling in a wheelchair or other mobility device, your driver will secure you using a four-point system along with a lap and shoulder belt, which you must use in addition to any belts you may have on your mobility device.  In the event of an emergency, follow the directions of your driver.

Shopping Bags

There is a limit of 3 bags given to you by the Senior Center. Weight limit is 25lbs.  Drivers will be happy to assist you with loading and unloading your packages.

Other Transportation Options

Manchester Dial-a-Ride serves Manchester residents who are 60 years of age or older and people with disabilities.  Rides are provided for medical appointments, shopping, hair appointments, personal business, and recreation. To register, call 860-870-7940 any weekday between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Reservations are accepted between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. weekdays.

ADA (American with Disabilities Act) Transportation provides rides in accordance with the specifications of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  This service is available to locations in the Greater Hartford area.  You may call 860-724-5340 to learn about the procedure to qualify.  A fee is charged for rides.
